http colon whack whack dub-dub-dub dot google dot com
What in the world did I just say? I sound like a toddler talking in words and sounds that make no sense at all! πThe funny thing is, if you talk to a person involved with DevOps, they will know and understand exactly what you said! π²
whack = "/" That forward slash symbol on a Mac key board that is usually placed under the ? ...... that is referred to as a "whack". Think of a duck quacking who forgot to sound the "q". π
That forward slash (/) "whack" is the path separator that will eventually lead to the file on your web server. Let's say the url is www.cloviscorp.com/collegium/grammar/index.html , then the browser will first find the webserver (in this case: www.cloviscorp.com). It then starts in that server's filesystem at the docroot (/var/html/www) and then continuing through to /collegium/grammar , where the file index.html resides (at the webserver's filesystem: /var/html/www/collegium/grammar/index.html).
dub-dub-dub = "www" We all know that "www" precedes the domain name of a website. To the layman, "www" is the understood way to say this. In DevOps - you better start singing that song in your head: rub a "dub-dub" ---> well in this case it's rub a "dub-dub-dub"
bang = "!" Huh? That is an exclamation mark. Yep, it is. However in DevOps, it is known as a "bang". Don't ask me why, but it is. So if you are in your terminal using the Vi editor, to exit out of that you would type ":q!" which when spoken, is said as "colon q bang". The exclamation mark (!) "bang" has a few meanings, but the most common meaning is "not". For example, if == means "equals", then != means "not-equals". 1 == 1, 3 != 1
So there you have it, DevOps people do know how to have some fun - even if it is computer fun.
Look out for my next blog - where I will finally talk about XML and even some cool shortcuts I learned.
